PPE Selection Guidance

Choosing the Right PPE Protects Lives

Electricity is arguably the most valuable resource we have in our modern society. Without electricity, most of the things we do and rely on on a daily basis wouldn't be there.

Understanding the importance of wearing, selecting, and caring for the proper PPE is essential to ensuring the protection of your employees and/or vendors.

The Codes in NFPA 70E are, "Minimum Standards." These codes provide the employer with a minimum standard requirement for personal protection equipment.

Minimum Standards Are Not Maximum Protection

NFPA 70E defines the minimum — but choosing only the minimum puts your workers at serious risk. Here's what you need to understand about PPE and arc flash protection.

Understanding Minimum Standards

The Codes in NFPA 70E are "Minimum Standards." These codes are used to provide the employer with a minimum standard requirement for personal protection equipment — the least required for survival, not the most protective option.

Level 1 PPE Reality

If the Arc Flash Label says "the technician must wear level 1 PPE to work on this equipment while energized" it means the technician is only protected from getting a Third-Degree Incurable Burn. A second-degree burn under the PPE is still possible if exposed to an Arc Flash Event (Explosion).

Why Proper Selection Matters

Well, of course you wouldn't want to be exposed to, or expose one of your employees to a second-degree burn. Therefore, the selection of the proper PPE is essential. Even more so, why the instructions for caring for and laundering one's PPE is so important.

Protection & Maintenance

Understanding the importance of wearing, selecting, and caring for the proper PPE is essential to ensuring the protection of your employees and/or vendors. PPE that is improperly maintained can fail at the moment it is needed most.

Have you ever had a first-degree burn?

Excruciating, right? Now imagine a second-degree burn — under PPE — during an arc flash event. That's why proper PPE selection guidance is not optional. It's the difference between survivable and life-altering.
